Top Songs:
1. The Reeling by Passion Pit : One of the most beautifully orchestrated pop songs I have ever heard. The chorus makes the song what it is.
2. Ize Of The World by The Strokes : One of the most enduring songs that I have heard, being that it's been up at the top of the list since the time I heard it. The song features a wonderful verse, with 2 clever rhyme sessions in which each line ends with the sound "Ize".
3. Wraith Pinned Upon The Mist and Other Games by Of Montreal : A bass exposed song that has a perfectly composed bass line and a perfect voice to back it up.
4. The Good Times Are Killing Me by Modest Mouse : One of the most simple songs on here, but one of the most effective. It's lyrics are beautiful, and one of the few songs that can actually make me cry.
5. Time To Pretend by MGMT : Strictly synthesizer, the song is complete with a great synth riff and surprisingly beautiful lyrics.
6. Sleepyhead by Passion Pit : Synth pop heaven-- the singer shamelessly sings up his octave with a voice that doesn't match his face. The background sounds show now audible riff, but is kept together with a delightfully rhythmic bass accompanied by claps.
7. A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger by Of Montreal : Another beautiful synth riff, the chorus is one of the most beautifully orchestrated chorus I have ever heard. Kevin Barnes tops the song off with a perfectly harmony with his own voice
8. We're Going To Be Friends by The White Stripes : The most simple song to make the list, and the most exposed. Jack White creates a classic acoustic guitar line, complete with a catchy vocal.
9. Razorblade by The Strokes : The song's verses are somewhat lacking and the song itself seems somewhat incomplete, but the chorus and the outro are perfectly orchestrated. The climactic part of the song where Julian Casablancas sings along with the guitar hits you like a train and makes the song truly irresistible.
10. Viva La Vida by Coldplay : The percussion is somewhat similar to Sleepyhead on this song, which is no more than needed. The complexity of the song comes from the strings. The song is rather simple despite the complex layers of sounds, where it gets it's true genius.
Top Bands:
1. Radiohead : This band, although having no songs in the top 10 songs, is consecutively good from album to album. Their albums each have different themes, and it's hard to believe how they can keep coming out with the hits that they do.
2. The Strokes : The Strokes are simple minded and don't do more than they need to. They interweave old 70's rock styles into new indie sounds.
3. Of Montreal : A mix of numerous styles with a childish spin on each song. The band is catchy and has a strong affinity for synthesizers.
4. The Mars Volta : Despite being very dark, The Mars Volta is just plain incredible. Their unorthodox mix of an inhuman falsetto, eccentric vocabulary, and raw talent comes together rather well and makes The Mars Volta well defined.
5. Beck : Beck's ability to mix hick, rap, and technology is unfathomable. He is also multitalented, exploring all genres of alternative rock that he can. His music is also rather artistic.
6. Tool : A blend of art, metal, and brains, Tool knows exactly what they're doing. They don't seem to follow the mindless self indulgent nature of metal which sets them apart.
7. That Handsome Devil : R&B and rock meets in the middle with a touch of vanity. They have a unique singer who has an obvious grip on reality.
8. Rage Against The Machine : Although fairly simple and self indlugent on the surface, Rage has a complexity tied to each song that makes you really think about what's going on today. Plus, Tom Morello can really wail on the guitar.
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers : A die hard band that has a hard time choosing between rock and funk. Their genius lies with John Frusciante and Flea, the guitar instrumentalists. (both of which make constant appearances on The Mars Volta)
10. Green Day : A mix between punk and grunge, Green Day set the bar for countless garage bands looking for a career, influencing most punk bands out today. They're rather simple and no more than they need to be, like The Strokes are.
Top Albums:
1. Is This It? by The Strokes : Each song is pure genius and has no impurities to distort the cd in any way. In a nutshell, it's perfect.
2. In Rainbows by Radiohead : The album takes the sound of Hail To The Thief, and brightens it up. The album is near perfect and is extremely artistic. On top of that, you discover a little more each time you listen to it.
3. Satanic Panic In The Attic by Of Montreal : Of Montreal steps away from synthesizers for a little while and decides to make an indie pop album that makes you want more.
4. The Bends by Radiohead : The album that made history-- Radiohead decides to pull out all the slots and create a classic album that the world will never forget.
5. Sea Change by Beck : Beck shows his tender side with this album and puts everything out in the open instead of letting you decode each song. I first bought this cd and was disappointed, but the more I listened to it the more I loved it. This album is absolutely perfect in every way.
6. Era Vulgaris by Queens Of The Stone Age : I just can't get tired of this album. Q.O.T.S.A. channels Nine Inch Nails with an industrial rock album that has hit after hit. On top of that, the song Sick Sick Sick features Julian Casablancas of The Strokes.
7. Deloused In The Comatorium by The Mars Volta : I have no clue why Rolling Stone gave this album 3 stars out of 5. The album is classic Mars Volta and is insanely well orchestrated. The bass for the entire album is played by legendary Flea of The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
8. Kid A by Radiohead : The album is pure art rock, and put Radiohead in the record books... again. Before Kid A, Radiohead was mainly anthem rock, but when they made Kid A, they their past away and decided to make their own sound despite what anyone else would say.
9. Superunknown by Soundgarden : Soundgarden mixes grunge with metal and creates a cd that is near perfect. The cd has a tendency to switch rhythms and time signatures constantly.
10. Lateralus by Tool : Tool channels Soundgarden and spins off grunge by mixing it with metal. Lateralus alone put Tool on my top bands list due to the brains behind the lyrics.
